We are sending out a SOS for folks to call their Senators and ask them advocate for the postponement of the Senate Budge hearing to examine the nomination of Russell T. Vought to serve as the Director of Office of Management and Budget. This letter was just released by Senator Schumerâs office:
Budget Committee Democrats, Leader Schumer Press to Delay Voughtâs OMB Nomination
WASHINGTON, D.C. â Today, Democratic members of the Senate Budget Committee along with Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) demanded that Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-SC) delay Russell Voughtâs nomination to serve as Director of Office of Management and Budget (OMB) until he satisfactorily answers questions regarding his advice to the President relating to the illegal impoundment of Congressionally appropriated funds â questions that have taken on greater urgency in light of OMBâs directive âto freeze all funding for âFederal financial assistance programs.ââ
âWhile Mr. Vought stonewalled Committee members, he was already planning on halting programs that feed hungry children, heat the homes of low-income families, support farmers, and bring relief to those suffering from natural disasters. The laws Congress passes are not suggestions, and Mr. Vought willfully ignoring them harms the constituents of every Member of the Committee,â the Senators wrote.
The Senators called for the Budget Committee to postpone the vote on Vought for two weeks while they get full and complete responses to questions from the nominee.
The Senators stated, âIt is simply unconscionable that the Budget Committee could vote to confirm Mr. Vought to be Director of Office of Management and Budget without getting some real answers from him about his ongoing efforts to stymie the will of Congress. Mr. Vought is a clear and present danger to Congressâs Power of the Purse; his outright refusal to discuss his plans that were already in development is a slap in the face to every Member of the Committee, Democrat and Republican alike.â
The letter was signed by all the Democrats of the Senate Budget CommitteeâRanking Member Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Patty Murray (D-WA), Ron Wyden (D-OR), Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Mark Warner (D-VA), Tim Kaine (D-VA), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Ben Ray LujĂĄn (D-NM), and Alex Padilla (D-CA)âand Leader Schumer.

Dear Senator Graham:
During the Budget Committeeâs hearing on Wednesday, January 22 to examine the nomination of Russell T. Vought to serve as the Director of Office of Management and Budget, Mr. Vought was repeatedly evasive about whether, if confirmed, he would advise the President to impound Congressionally-appropriated funds in clear violation of Article II of the Constitution and the unambiguous text of the Impoundment Control Act of 1974.
In written responses to questions following the hearing, Mr. Vought continued his refusal to answer direct questions about how executive orders to pause foreign aid funding, as well as funding authorized and appropriated by the Inflation Reduction Act and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, complied with the law.
Now, less than a week after the hearing, it is clear that Mr. Voughtâs non-answers were an effort to thwart the Committee from getting the truth of the Trump administrationâs plan, per OMB memorandum M-25-13, to freeze all funding for âFederal financial assistance programs.â While Mr. Vought stonewalled Committee members, he was already planning on halting programs that feed hungry children, heat the homes of low-income families, support farmers, and bring relief to those suffering from natural disasters. The laws Congress passes are not suggestions, and Mr. Vought willfully ignoring them harms the constituents of every Member of the Committee.
It is simply unconscionable that the Budget Committee could vote to confirm Mr. Vought to be Director of Office of Management and Budget without getting some real answers from him about his ongoing efforts to stymie the will of Congress. Mr. Vought is a clear and present danger to Congressâs Power of the Purse; his outright refusal to discuss his plans that were already in development is a slap in the face to every Member of the Committee, Democrat and Republican alike.
For those reasons, we request that the business meeting to consider Mr. Voughtâs nomination, currently scheduled for Thursday, January 30, be postponed for two weeks so the Committee may get full responses to the questions Mr. Vought has thus far refused to answer.
Stop Project 2025 January 29, 2025 News Briefs
Convicted 34-time felon
and President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Russell Vought to lead the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).
Russ Vought, Trump's former Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director and a self-described Christian nationalist, poses a significant threat to every American as Trump's nominee to lead the OMB again. As a key architect of Project 2025, Russ Vought has played a pivotal role in crafting its 180-day playbook to consolidate presidential power through sweeping executive orders, regulations, and memos. He continues to lead these efforts through his organization, the Center for Renewing America (CRA), which he founded and he serves on the Project 2025 advisory panel.
Key elements of Russ Vought's agenda include:
Attacking Essential Programs: Vought championed Trump's budgets, proposing devastating cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Securityâlifelines for millions of Americans.
Risking Economic Chaos: He encouraged House Republicans to use reckless brinkmanship over the debt ceiling, threatening an economic crisis and default.
Undermining Democracy: Vought's backing of the radical "Schedule F" plan to strip away the rights of federal employees and his handprint on Project 2025âs agenda seeks to gut federal protections and inject partisan politics into government institutions.
Lack of Integrity: His record of withholding critical information from Congress, including during the Ukraine aid scandal, highlights a troubling disregard for transparency and accountability.
Weaponizing Investigations: Vought and his allies have called for an "army of investigations" to prosecute perceived ideological adversaries, heightening political polarization and undermining institutional neutrality.
Extreme Deregulation: As a lead architect of Project 2025, Vought's aggressive deregulatory blueprint threatens workers' rights, environmental protections, and the well-being of American families.
Christian Nationalist Agenda: Vought's policy positions are deeply tied to his self-identified Christian nationalist ideology, which seeks to intertwine religion with governance and advance a far-right political agenda to replace democracy with an autocratic theocracy.
America deserves leadership focused on building a stronger, fairer futureânot someone trying to dismantling it.
Why It Matters
Russ Vought's track record and role in Project 2025 reveal a calculated effort to dismantle institutional protections, expand presidential authority, and erode federal agency independence. Installing Russ Vought as Executive Director of OMB directly threatens public programs, economic stability, and the democratic principles we rely on. Vought, who currently heads an extremist MAGA organization, is unfit to manage America's budget and far too extreme to prioritize the health, safety, well-being, and public good of the American people.
America deserves leadership grounded in unity and dedicated to the greater good, not driven by extreme political ideologies. Russell Vought is a clear and present danger to everyday Americans and should be removed from serious consideration for the Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) role.
Time is of the essence. We need to get loud and keep amplifying a NO Vote on Vought.
